The Enemies of Wine – Why You Need a Wine Bottle Refrigerator

Posted on

A well made wine bottle refrigerator will help the collector overcome the four enemies of wine: temperature, light, humidity, and vibration. Most home environments are not suitable for the storage of fine wines. Let’s review each of these factors in more detail.

Temperature

The optimal temperature for storage depends on the type of wine:

Red – Store between 55 to 60 degrees F
White – Store between 49 to 56 degrees F
Rose – Store between 49 to 51 degrees F
Champagne – Store between 53 to 59 degrees F

Bottles kept at higher temperatures will age too fast, causing a lack of freshness and subtlety. Lower temperatures paralyze wine, retarding its natural development.

A quality wine bottle refrigerator will not only keep your bottles at the proper temperature, they will also maintain a constant temperature within the unit.

Light

Darkness is ideal for a cellar. Exposure to ultraviolet light will prematurely age and damage wine. This is a primary reason why wine is traditionally bottled in colored glass. Thus it is prudent to store your collection away from the potentially damaging effects of such light sources.

Quality cellars will have U.V. protected glass doors to help create an ideal environment in which to store wine.

Humidity

Maintaining proper humidity is essential in preventing the corks from drying out. This is also achieved by laying the bottles on their sides, so that the wine is in constant contact with the cork. A cork that is kept moist does not lose its shape, thus maintaining a good seal. Prolonged exposure to oxygen will spoil a good wine.

A well functioning wine bottle refrigerator will have natural ventilation that allows for condensation to form on the walls of the unit, which helps produce the correct humidity for preservation of the collection. Proper air circulation and filtering is needed to create the right environment free from mold and odor.

Vibration

Moving bottles too often is harmful to good wine preservation. Wine needs to sleep, and frequent disturbance will agitate it. Vibration interferes with the biochemical process of maturation and is often fatal to the best wines. Therefore, the best wine cabinets are designed to house the greatest possible number of bottles of all sizes, and built to keep harmful vibrations to a minimum. Unlike conventional refrigerators, wine bottle cellars have no or few moving parts.

By reading this you are obviously care about your wine! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to store your wine in your own cellar? Where you know your valuable collection will be protected from the four enemies of wine. Remember, a wine cellar doesn’t have to be an expensive separate room; it could be a refrigerated wine cabinet that is sized to your needs and budget.

With everyone trying to find ways to be more economical, people have learned to find ways to enjoy quality times with friends, instead of spending large sums of money going out on the town. There are always good times to be had when you are able to enjoy a fine bottle with your friends.

Some people don’t see a reason to put their bottles in the refrigerator, and most might simply put the wine inside of a regular refrigerator. However, what many people don’t know, is that putting it in the refrigerator can ruin your bottle of wine. This is why you need to purchase a storage refrigerator.

Many are under the assumption that wine doesn’t go bad, because it’s an alcoholic beverage. This in fact isn’t true. While it’s true that it is an alcoholic beverage, it can and will go bad. It will go bad from the air, and from any mold and bacteria that might be floating around. So, how can mold and bacteria get into your bottle if it is corked? This is because corks breathe. This means that they allow air, and whatever is in the air into the bottle of wine. So, if someone has moldy or old food in the refrigerator, these bacteria and spores can find their way inside of your nice bottle of wine. Especially if it has been opened already, it will spoil. You’ll know it’s spoiled, because it will have a bad, sour, vinegar taste. In some cases, bad wine can make you sick. So to avoid this, be sure to purchase a storage refrigerator.

Another advantage of having a wine storage refrigerator, is that certain wines, such as white wine, are highlighted in flavor when they are chilled. A standard refrigerator is set for the temperature of your food. But a wine refrigerator will be specially designed, and temperature set to not only keep your bottle of wine fresh, but to also bring out the best notes and flavors. So it really is to your advantage to buy a storage refrigerator.

A wine storage refrigerator makes a nice gift for yourself, or for the wine enthusiast in your circle. Instead of waiting on line for an overpriced bottled of wine, you and your friends can enjoy perfectly chilled bottles right in your home, in your environment. You can set up events, such as wine tastings, or wine and cheese nights. Or, if you’d like to host something more intimate, you can create a dinner date that features wines that will have a wonderful flavor, because they were stored in a storage refrigerator. When you and your guest notice the difference in the flavor, and when you stop having to pour a good bottle down the drain, you will be very glad that you bought a wine storage refrigerator.

Red Wine Refrigerator – Why You Need One

Most people don’t think to chill their red wine. Unfortunately, that means they aren’t getting the best out of the bottles they buy. When you invest in a good bottle of red wine, it makes sense to treat it with respect and ensure that it can mature correctly, which is only possible in optimum conditions.

Originally, red wine would have been kept in a wine cellar. These underground chambers were perfect for making sure the wine stayed at just the right temperature, no refrigeration needed! These days, very few people actually have a wine cellar, though part of your basement could potentially be converted into one. The solution? A red wine refrigerator.

Regular Fridges Just Don’t Cut It

Why can’t you just pop your tinted wine into your kitchen fridge? There are a number of reasons this is NOT a good idea.

First of all, the kitchen refrigerator is not meant for wine. It’s too cold. While the wine needs to be cool, it should not be refrigerated at any temperature lower than 50 degrees F. The average kitchen fridge ranges from 35-38 degrees, which is far too low for your red wine. A wine bottle refrigerator can be set to just the right temperature, ensuring the best quality wine possible.

Another consideration is vibration. Regular fridges have pretty strong vibrations, but if you know anything about wine, you know it matures best when left unmolested and allowed to sit for long periods of time. The vibrations in a regular fridge is very disruptive to this process, so you need a way to cool the bottles without shaking them up at all. Red wine refrigerators do this very nicely, since they have built-in anti vibration mechanisms that keep the bottles chilled and undisturbed.

When choosing a cooler for your bottles, you’ll find that it is very important to look for one that fits the space you have. There are fridges that only hold 6 bottles for those of you who don’t need a lot of space and plenty of larger sizes, as well. Built-ins work very well for those who have a full collection.

You need a red wine refrigerator if you are serious about your collection of alcoholic beverages. Otherwise, the bottles you own are not being kept at the right temperature and this affects the quality of the wine.

Stainless Wine Refrigerator

Many people make the mistake of thinking that by just keeping their wine in a normal kitchen refrigerator they will conserve quality and they wonder why other people rave on about having a wine refrigerator. As far as wine drinkers are concerned, though, red wine at normal kitchen refrigerator temperature becomes far too cold for drinking. So too with white wine; there’s a limit to how much this should be chilled also.

To get the very best out of your wine collection, always store the wine at the correct temperature. Letting the wine get too warm will affect the taste and overall quality. This is where the importance of choosing a wine bottle refrigerator comes into consideration and you think: How big a unit do I want? How many bottles will I be storing? How will it look on display? Do I want a wooden or a stainless wine refrigerator? How much will it cost?

Like most household appliances there are many different brands to choose from. People are aware of the leading manufacturers in the household goods category: LG, Westinghouse, Avanti, Whirlpool, Viking, Electrolux, etc. The brand name is not the main thing, though, as price will probably be a more determining factor when choosing a unit.

If you are considering a stainless wine refrigerator, you will most likely give a lot of consideration to a unit with dual zone temperature control. This set-up will allow you to store your prized bottles of red as well as your whites.

As a keen wine collector, I have never regretted purchasing a wine bottle refrigerator to keep my wine collection in pristine condition. I opted for a stainless wine refrigerator to blend in with my apartment surroundings.

Shop around before purchasing a wine refrigerator. Good discount prices are available if you are prepared to do diligent research. I purchased my unit online and have yet to find a better deal elsewhere.

The Vinotemp Wine Refrigerator that I purchased, for example, is one of the best brands on the market. It allows wine collectors to store their wines without having to resort to underground cellars. The unit has a well-lit interior, security lock, traditional thermoelectric cooling, and exterior LED display.

If you are wine collector, you want to be able to pull out a bottle of wine and have a good idea before having it with your meal that it will taste just right. If you are having friends over to your house to sample one of your favorite wines, you want an assurance of quality before opening a bottle. Only through storing your wines in a wine bottle refrigerator can you have such assurance.
